  “.within.four.walls.”

“.within.four.walls” will focus on the life of roommates confined to a single room living space. The dorm room will become a studio with the doors closed to the outside world. The study will show the moments that are only shared with a roommate, such as late night studying or lack thereof, playing dress up, odd eating habits such as eating soup out of the can, sleeping styles, musical and artistic endeavors, humorous hygienic moments such as teeth whitening and face washing, early morning rituals, late night phone calls, and creative procrastination involving dancing around the room and instant messenger. “.within.four.walls.” will also show the bond that two people of the same sex are able to share without a sexual relationship, cuddling with each other while watching a movie for example. It will show two people in their purest form; both the good and the bad will be shared with a stranger.
“.within.four.walls.” will share how two people are able to exist in a single living area with bunk beds, two closets, and a shared dresser; it is a study of relationships and boundaries. This study will demonstrate how two people are able to be themselves in a shared environment. It will illustrate the invisible line of the room being crossed, two styles merging into one, two people from different backgrounds sharing eight months of their lives together, and how a strong relationship can be built in that brief time.
The photographs will be taken with a digital single lens reflex camera and will be displayed as 8”x10”s printed by an Epson photo printer on matte paper. A digital camera will be used so that everything will be kept in the room, there will be no need for any outside work, the process will be confined to the single roomed living space, and only the end product will leave and be put on display for the public eye. The photographs will include self-portraits, portraits of my roommate, and photographs of us interacting with each other.
Some of the photographs will be easily understood while others will leave the viewer to wonder at the activity and the subject matter. Captions of sayings and quotes will be handwritten with a Sharpie marker on all of the photos. The captions will both help the viewer to understand what is going on in the photograph, and leave the viewer to wonder at the context of both the photograph and the writing itself. The quotes will come from things that were said in the room, or from readings and movies that have touched our lives in some way.
The photographs will be taken in different light conditions, such as the glow of a computer screen, Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling, the overhead light, and late night desk lamps. While some of the photographs will be in focus, others will be taken out of focus to convey the feelings shared between the two people. With the use of a tripod, the camera shutter will remain open to show the movement in the room during longer periods of time. The ISO (film speed) on the camera will be changed and different colored filters will be placed on the lens to change the look and feel of the photography. There will be very little use of Adobe Photoshop; the program will only be used to crop some of the photographs and to make the contrast in the printed photograph higher than it would be if printed otherwise.
